Former Barcelona star Dani Alves has surprised many after turning to religion and taking on a new role as a preacher. The 42-year-old Brazilian football legend, who once dazzled fans on the pitch with his speed and skill, is now making headlines for his spiritual transformation.

Alves, who was one of the most decorated footballers of his generation, had spent 14 months behind bars after being accused of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub toilet. In February 2024, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. 

However, in a dramatic twist, Catalonia’s high court overturned his conviction in March, leading to his release.

Since regaining his freedom, Alves appears to have embarked on a new journey of faith. The football icon, alongside his wife Joana Sanz who recently gave birth to their first child earlier this month was spotted in Girona, Spain, where he delivered a sermon at the Elim Church

A video that surfaced online showed the bearded ex-footballer addressing the congregation passionately, microphone in hand, as church members applauded his message. 

Alves spoke about his newfound faith and how he believes God saved him from a dark chapter in his life.

“You must take God seriously and have faith. I am the living proof,” Alves declared. “What God promises, He delivers. I have agreed a pact with God. In the midst of turbulence and storms, there is always a messenger from God. 

This messenger gathered me up and brought me to the church. And now I am on the right path, thanks to Him.”

Alves’ transformation has sparked mixed reactions across Spain and beyond, with many expressing shock at his new calling. 

Once celebrated for his dazzling performances with Barcelona where he won 23 trophies including three UEFA Champions League titles and six LaLiga crownsAlves is now determined to dedicate his life to spreading the word of God.
