A tragic road accident involving five articulated trucks occurred on Thursday morning along Kara Bridge, inward Mowe, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, leaving at least four people dead and several others injured.
One of the deceased was identified as a police inspector serving with the Lagos State Police Command.
During a visit to the scene, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed the incident and disclosed that rescue teams had been on the ground since the early hours of the day to assist victims and clear the wreckage.
“We have a case of multiple accidents at the border between Ogun and Lagos State. Five vehicles were involved, all articulated vehicles. Precisely, three people have been rescued from the scene of the accident.
“As early as 5 a.m., we have been on it, and we have other agencies here assisting us. We have LASTMA, the Road Safety Corps, and other security agencies,” he said.
According to the police commissioner, preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was triggered by a trailer that experienced brake failure.
“At the beginning, we have a trailer that failed to brake, and it is important that everybody in charge of their vehicle ensures proper maintenance,” he explained.
Jimoh also confirmed that one of the police inspectors deployed as part of the response team lost his life during the operation.
“It’s very unfortunate that we lost one of our police inspectors who came with our advance team to salvage the situation,” he said.
He further cautioned drivers, particularly those operating heavy-duty trucks, to drive responsibly and adhere to safety regulations.
“We want road users, especially those driving articulated vehicles, to stop this kind of recklessness. If they are not reckless in their driving habit, we won’t have this kind of accident,” he warned.
As of the time of filing this report, officials from the police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were still on the scene, working to remove the damaged vehicles and ease traffic flow.
