Nigerian singer and music executive Tobi Mohammed, better known as Alhaji Popping, has revealed a chilling near-death experience that almost ended his life. On a recent episode of the Adesope Live show, he recounted how he and his friend Rayce narrowly escaped a terrorist ambush in Bauchi State in 2017.
In his harrowing account, Alhaji Popping disclosed, “Me and Rayce were shot at 10 times in Bauchi in a car in 2017 by guys wearing military uniforms.” He admitted he never told his mother about the ordeal, adding, “If my mom watches this, she’s going to call me and pray for me because I didn’t tell her about the incident.”
He went on to describe the ferocity of the attack: “We were shot at. Bullets entered the steering, wheel, AC, the boot, but not one touched me.”
Reflecting on his narrow escape, the music executive said the experience marked a spiritual turning point for him:
“The experience is one of the things that have made me very close to God. Because I realised that everything that has happened to me was an expression of grace.” He said the attack forced him to re-examine life, faith, and purpose.
Though details of the ambush remain scarce, attacks by armed groups and imposters donning military attire have become an alarming security issue in parts of northern Nigeria, including Bauchi.
Alhaji Popping’s revelation underscores how deeply insecurity in Nigeria can impact ordinary citizens — even public figures. His testimony also resonates with other artists who have previously shared brushes with violence in Nigeria.
