“Stop Using Cotton Buds in Your Ears” –“It is Not for Ear Cleaning” – Viral Health Advisory Shocks Nigerians

A Nigerian nurse has ignited discussions online after issuing a vital health warning about the misuse of cotton buds for ear cleaning.

In a health advisory shared on social media, the nurse explained that cotton buds are not designed for ear wax removal. She warned that inserting them into the ear canal can do “more harm than good,” as it often pushes ear wax deeper, potentially causing blockages, infections, or even eardrum damage.

According to her, cotton buds are better suited for other hygienic purposes, including disinfecting small wounds, cleaning around the nose, wiping away eye discharge, and applying ointments to targeted areas of the skin.

She further highlighted that ear wax—medically known as cerumen—acts as a natural protective barrier for the ears and generally does not need to be removed. For cases of excessive ear wax buildup, she urged individuals to seek professional medical care instead of resorting to cotton buds.

Her educational post has gone viral, sparking conversations across social media platforms. Many Nigerians confessed that they had grown up believing cotton buds were safe for ear cleaning, expressing surprise and concern upon learning about the potential health risks.
