Hilda Baci, Nigeria’s renowned chef and former Guinness World Record holder, has once again captured global attention with an extraordinary culinary feat. Recently, at the World Jollof Festival held at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, she successfully cooked the world’s largest pot of jollof rice, a signature dish beloved across West Africa.
Initially, Hilda planned to use 250 bags of rice, but due to technical limitations with weighing equipment—specifically a 20,000-kilogram maximum combined weight for the rice and the custom pot—she adjusted her plan to 200 bags, equivalent to 4,000 kilograms of rice. Despite this reduction, the enormous pot, which measured six meters in both diameter and height, was capable of serving a staggering 20,000 people.
This remarkable achievement was no small undertaking. Over the course of nearly a year of meticulous preparation, Hilda and her team coordinated a massive cooking event that also included 500 cartons of tomato paste and 600 kilograms of onions. A team of approximately 300 people helped bring the project to life, creating the custom pot over a two-month period. The cooking event was made accessible to the public, with attendees able to enjoy the jollof rice free of charge.
For Hilda Baci, this was her most ambitious project yet, building on her previous acclaim from 2023 when she set the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon. The successful jollof rice cooking event has further solidified her reputation as a culinary icon, not just in Nigeria but around the world.
