Controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has called on President Bola Tinubu to implement meaningful reforms in the Nigeria Police Force, insisting that citizen protection should take precedence alongside economic growth.

The appeal, made in a video shared on Saturday, August 23, 2025, highlights ongoing concerns about human rights violations and police misconduct in the country.

“Mr. President, before you leave office, whether you get a second term or not, do your best to improve Nigeria. Leadership isn’t only about the economy!” Speed Darlington said in the video.

He stressed that while economic development is important, the welfare and security of Nigerians are equally vital.

According to the singer, the Nigerian Police Force has consistently failed in its duty to protect citizens, often engaging in oppressive practices.

“There is more to leadership than finances. Look around people are calling your name, complaining. Nobody truly loves you. Only those you’ve given jobs to support you.

Even your own tribe is unhappy,” he said, emphasizing that leadership must address systemic issues beyond monetary metrics.

Speed Darlington, an Igbo man, urged President Tinubu to focus on police reform as a core part of his legacy. “As an Igbo man, my advice for leaving a positive legacy is this: reform the police.

The Nigerian Police is an oppressive institution often violating human rights. It seems like if they aren’t oppressing someone, they aren’t doing their job,” he stated.

He also called on Tinubu to engage directly with the Inspector General of Police, stressing that the practice of arresting individuals before proper investigation constitutes a blatant violation of human rights.

“Before you leave office, speak to your Yoruba brother, the IGP. The practice of arresting before investigation is a blatant human rights violation. You arrest someone and hold them before any investigation this is wrong,” he said.

Sharing his personal encounter with law enforcement, Speed Darlington revealed, “I was detained for two months even after a judge ordered my release.

FID held me for two months. My lawyer told me the law allows only 28 days for investigation, yet they held me longer— imply because they could. They oppress your enemies if you don’t pay them. I’ve experienced it firsthand.”

His comments come amid growing public outcry over police brutality, arbitrary arrests, and human rights abuses in Nigeria. By urging the Tinubu administration to prioritize reform, Speed Darlington aligns himself with many Nigerians demanding accountability and a more professional police force.

In conclusion, Speed Darlington’s appeal on August 23, 2025, underscores the pressing need for police reform in Nigeria. He emphasized that leadership is not solely about economic metrics but also about creating a system where citizens can live safely and trust law enforcement to uphold justice.
