Queen (Chinonye) Stole the Show
One character completely elevated the entire story for me — Queen, also known as Chinonye. You might be wondering why she answers to two names. That’s your cue to watch the movie because I won’t spoil it for you.
Queen delivered an outstanding performance, making bold choices that constantly shifted the plot. Her quick thinking and decisiveness made her a standout character, especially in how she handled Pascal. Honestly, Pascal irritated me every single time he appeared on screen, and watching Queen take control was immensely satisfying.
Their friendship was a perfect example of the saying, “baboon dey work, monkey dey chop.” This wasn’t a “friends with benefits” situation — Queen was getting nothing from that useless person (efulefu, in Igbo). She was essentially his money-making machine, and it was baffling why Pascal treated her that way.
At one point, I even yelled at the screen, “Girl, why aren’t you thinking straight?” Queen brought home tips while living with a devourer of her efforts. The least she could have done was find a safer way to save her money — maybe through a bank or POS agent.
Despite this, I have to applaud Queen. Many women in her shoes would have been too scared to take the risky moves she did, especially with no family to rely on and a dangerous person in her life. But Queen remained fearless, and the writer ensured her boldness stayed central to the story.
Queen vs. Austin’s Mum: A Clash of Energy
Another scene that impressed me was when Queen faced Austin’s mum. She matched her energy blow for blow, proving that madness isn’t exclusive to one person. It was a satisfying moment of empowerment and showed Queen’s resilience.
Speaking of Austin’s mum, she was extremely annoying. One moment that stood out was her morning prayer, where she asked God for forgiveness in advance for the ill treatment she planned to dish out on another woman’s child — just because her son deemed the woman worthy to marry. Talk about wild behavior!
Austin, meanwhile, seemed supportive of Nene, urging her to stand up for herself. But Nene initially refused. I could relate to her at first — I, too, used to endure anything just to stay in someone’s good books. But life has taught me that respect should never come at the cost of your happiness or well-being.
Other Characters That Stood Out
While Queen was the highlight, Nene also caught my attention. She was relatable because she mirrored the struggles many women face in trying to keep peace or gain approval. The contrast between her cautious approach and Queen’s boldness made for interesting dynamics.
Austin himself was perplexing to me. How did he not notice the huge difference in Queen? One moment she was soft-spoken and decently dressed, and the next she had an entirely different vibe. Perhaps love and desperation for a home blinded him to the obvious.
Final Thoughts: Bold, Entertaining, and Full of Lessons
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Half of Me. The story was engaging, the characters memorable, and the moral lessons clear. Queen’s courage, the tension with Austin’s mum, and the different approaches of the characters created a rich, entertaining narrative.
Sonia Uche truly delivered with this one. Between the suspense, drama, and strong performances, it’s a must-watch on Sonia Uche TV.
