Celebrity fashion designer Veekee James has shared how she once struggled with depression following false rumours about her relationship with her husband, Femi Atere.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Nancy Isime, Veekee disclosed that the only time she truly broke down over negative press was when stories circulated online accusing her of snatching her now-husband from a friend.
“There was one that really shook me, and that was the period when we had to ask God to help us come out of it. Immediately, we came out of it; that was the end,” she recalled.
According to her, the report almost pushed her into depression. “It was a story about how I stole him from a friend, and we were sleeping with each other, which was all lies. And it almost put me into depression. That was the first time I got to know what people who say they feel depressed felt.”
She recounted how she locked herself in her room for two days, crying and praying, until she found strength again. “I remember entering my room and not coming out for two days. I was crying and praying. The way God brought me out felt like a miracle and I kept hearing more stories which I laugh off.”
The designer, who has since developed a thick skin towards online trolling and criticisms, tied the knot with Femi Atere on February 10, 2024. The glamorous wedding was attended by several celebrities including Juliana Olayode, Eniola Ajao, Osas Ighodaro, Toke Makinwa, Priscilla Ojo, Pretty Mike, among others. Veekee also made headlines by featuring a 200-member choir at the ceremony.
Despite the wedding’s extravagance, it faced heavy criticism from some Nigerians who felt she went overboard, prompting media personality Daddy Freeze to urge the public to allow the couple enjoy their new marriage in peace.
During their church thanksgiving, Veekee spoke fondly of her husband, describing him as God’s gift to her. She said: “He is the best man God has ever given me. He has brought me peace and he is so humble. I made the right choice by choosing a man like him.”
