The Lagos State Government has responded to the uproar sparked by TikTok influencer, Peller, who claimed he was issued a ₦36 million tax bill.
Abdulkabir Ogungbo, Special Adviser on Tax and Revenue to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, clarified that the state’s tax system is not aimed at singling out individuals but applies uniformly to everyone earning within Lagos.
“Taxation in Lagos is not targeted at specific individuals but applies equally to all who earn legitimately within the state,” Ogungbo stated.
He pointed out that under Section 24 of the Nigerian Constitution, every citizen who makes an income is obligated to declare it truthfully and pay their taxes.
Addressing whether digital creators fall under this mandate, Ogungbo explained that recent tax reforms have broadened the scope to include virtual earnings.
“New tax reforms now cover digital assets and virtual transactions, meaning online influencers such as TikTok stars, YouTubers, and Instagram personalities are not exempt simply because their income is digital,” he added.
