Veteran Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I, has made a striking revelation about the Nigerian music industry, claiming that a significant portion of its funding comes from internet fraudsters.

Speaking as a guest on the ‘So Nigerian’ podcast, M.I expressed deep concern about the source of financial backing for many Nigerian artists. He described it as an indictment on Nigeria as a nation that a large part of the music industry’s funding is linked to fraudulent activities and foreign support, particularly from the West.

“There’s a lot of controversies when people talk about Yahoo Yahoo, because a lot of artists, that is the funding that they have,” M.I said.

“What I’m trying to say is that, it’s an indictment on our country that we have such talented musicians and that the major funding for the industry comes from the West and the fraud industry. It’s an indictment. It shows that something is wrong. Hopefully, we can do better.”

M.I’s comments highlight a troubling reality that the Nigerian music industry, despite its global influence and talent, heavily depends on questionable sources for financial support. This dependency raises ethical concerns and points to broader issues within Nigeria’s creative economy.

The rapper urged wealthy Nigerians, especially those with the means to invest, to step up and provide legitimate funding to help nurture the country’s musical talents. He emphasized that currently, the Nigerian music scene is predominantly supported financially by young people backing each other rather than by established and affluent individuals.

This call to action from one of Nigeria’s most respected music figures underscores the urgent need for sustainable and clean investment in the country’s entertainment sector. It also reflects a desire to see the Nigerian music industry thrive on a more ethical and economically sound foundation.

M.I, who has been a pivotal figure in Nigerian hip hop for over a decade, has not shied away from speaking on issues affecting the music industry.

His transparency on the role of internet fraudsters in funding the industry adds to ongoing conversations about the challenges faced by creatives in Nigeria.

The Nigerian music industry is known globally for its vibrant sounds, creativity, and influence. However, issues such as inadequate funding, piracy, and now the involvement of illicit money threaten its growth and reputation.

M.I’s comments may spur greater dialogue among stakeholders, including government, investors, and musicians themselves, on how to clean up and strengthen the financial backbone of the music industry.

It is hoped that with more awareness and commitment, the industry can attract more ethical investment and reduce its reliance on dubious sources.

As Nigeria’s entertainment sector continues to grow, the need for responsible and transparent funding has never been more critical to safeguard the future of its talented musicians and the country’s cultural legacy.
