TikTok has revealed that more than 3.6 million videos were taken down in Nigeria between January and March 2025 for breaching its community guidelines — a 50% increase from the previous quarter.
The information was disclosed in the platform’s Q1 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, released on Tuesday. According to the report, the vast majority of the content was swiftly addressed using proactive moderation tools.
“98.4 percent of the videos were taken down before users could report them, while 92.1 percent were removed within 24 hours of being posted,” the company stated.
TikTok credited the improvement in enforcement to advancements in its technology, the work of skilled moderation teams, and stronger detection systems designed to identify and remove harmful content before it gains traction.
“With millions of positive, educational, and entertaining videos uploaded on TikTok every day, TikTok is continually strengthening its ability to identify and remove content that goes against its Community Guidelines,” the report read.
Despite the high number of takedowns, TikTok emphasized that the removed videos represent only a small portion of total content posted by users in Nigeria.
“The latest removals report represents a small fraction of the total number of videos posted by the Nigerian community quarterly; highlighting that the platform has more positive and empowering content.”
In addition to content removals, the platform disclosed it had disrupted covert operations in the region. In March 2025, TikTok shut down 129 accounts in West Africa linked to coordinated inauthentic behavior.
The report also detailed an uptick in enforcement related to TikTok LIVE, the platform’s real-time streaming feature. In Q1 2025 alone, the company banned 42,196 live rooms and interrupted 48,156 live broadcasts in Nigeria for violating its guidelines.
To further protect its users and clarify expectations, TikTok announced updates to its live monetisation guidelines, outlining the types of content that are ineligible for revenue.
The company noted that the changes are aimed at keeping the platform safe while ensuring creators understand what is and isn’t permitted.
“The update is intended to ensure users are protected and monetisation policies remain transparent,” the report added.
