Award-winning Nigerian singer and producer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has announced the launch of a new platform focused on uplifting women in Africa’s music industry.
The initiative, known as the Leading Vibe Initiative, will kick off in Lagos on August 8 and 9. It is currently accepting applications from Nigerian female songwriters, producers, and artistes aged between 18 and 35, with submissions closing on July 13.
Tems explained that the idea was born out of her personal experience navigating the music scene without guidance or support as a self-taught female act in a male-dominated space.
“My goal with the Leading Vibe Initiative is to help discover and support talented young women who have the potential to redefine the industry,” she stated in a message shared with Guardian Life on Wednesday.
Describing the platform as “a movement and a sanctuary,” Tems said the programme will provide mentorship, capacity-building workshops, production tools, and access to global music networks.
Those selected will also have opportunities to collaborate with top artistes and professionals both within and outside Africa.
Data included in the announcement highlighted the gender imbalance in the global music industry — with women making up only 22 percent of recording artistes, and even lower percentages for songwriters (12.8%) and producers (3%).
Tems noted that the initiative aims to address this imbalance by equipping women with resources and a strong community. “We’re creating space for them to find their voices, step into their power and shape the future of music across the continent and globally,” she said.
The Lagos event marks the beginning of the project, with similar events planned in other African cities and international locations later in the year.
