Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has passed away after spending nearly two decades in a coma. The announcement was made by his family on social media on Sunday, bringing an end to a medical condition that captured the hearts of many across the Arab world.
The prince fell into a coma in 2005 following a traumatic brain injury sustained in a car accident while studying at a military college. Since then, he had remained in a minimally conscious state, with his family hoping and praying for his recovery for 19 years.
Throughout the years, his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, stood by his side and refused to remove life support, firmly believing in the possibility of his son’s recovery. In a previous interview, he stated, “If God wants him to die, he will die. But I will not pull the plug on him.”
In 2021, a video showing the prince moving his fingers sparked a wave of hope among supporters and family members, but his condition did not significantly improve thereafter.
Social media platforms were flooded with tributes and condolences from people across the Middle East following the announcement of his death. Many users praised the family’s unwavering dedication and expressed admiration for the strength shown throughout the ordeal.
Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled belonged to a prominent royal lineage. His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, is the brother of billionaire investor Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. The family has long held positions of influence in the kingdom.
The funeral prayers were held in Riyadh, where mourners gathered to pay their final respects. His passing marks the end of a long, emotionally charged chapter in Saudi royal history, and the memory of the “Sleeping Prince” will remain etched in the hearts of many.
