Toyin Abraham returns with The 4th Generation, a poignant and emotionally charged drama that explores the weight of legacy, generational trauma, and the unspoken tensions within Nigerian families.
Directed and produced by Abraham herself, the film is a layered and introspective look at how the past continues to shape the choices of the present especially for women navigating cultural expectations and personal aspirations.
The story follows the lives of three women from the same bloodline, each representing a different generation, caught in the unrelenting grip of tradition, societal judgment, and buried resentment.
Abraham plays the aging matriarch, a woman hardened by experience and haunted by past decisions. Her daughter, portrayed by Bimbo Akintola, carries the scars of a strict upbringing while trying to raise a more liberated daughter, played brilliantly by Bianca Ugowanne.
The generational tension unfolds with subtlety and strength, as the younger woman begins to question everything her family stands for.
What stands out most in The 4th Generation is the depth of its performances. Toyin Abraham is gripping in her role measured, emotionally raw, and grounded in truth. Bimbo Akintola brings emotional balance to the story, while Ugowanne injects freshness and energy into every scene she's in.
The film’s cinematography is intimate, drawing the audience into the private world of each character. The use of close-ups, warm lighting, and deliberate pacing creates a moody atmosphere that complements the heavy themes of regret, forgiveness, and self-discovery.
That said, the movie occasionally drags in the middle, and some supporting characters are underdeveloped.
Certain scenes feel a bit too familiar, echoing tropes seen in similar Nollywood dramas. Still, Abraham manages to keep the narrative emotionally grounded, particularly in one unforgettable scene between mother and daughter that serves as the film’s emotional climax.
The 4th Generation may not reinvent the wheel, but it’s a heartfelt and culturally resonant film that speaks to the complexities of family and identity.
Toyin Abraham proves once again that she is more than just an actress she’s a storyteller with purpose, crafting a film that lingers long after the credits roll. It’s a quiet but powerful offering that deserves attention.
