A single, glittery sock once worn by the late pop icon Michael Jackson during a 1997 performance in France has fetched an astonishing €7,688 (approximately $8,822) at a French auction, capturing the attention of fans and collectors worldwide.

The sock, described as “off-white” and visibly stained with signs of age, was worn during Jackson’s HIStory World Tour in the southern French city of Nîmes. According to auctioneer Aurore Illy, the rhinestone-covered sock was discovered near Jackson’s dressing room by a technician shortly after the concert. For years, it remained a unique piece of memorabilia before making its way to the auction block this week.

The sock had initially been valued between €3,000 and €4,000, but the final sale price nearly doubled expectations, highlighting the enduring appeal and mystique of the self-proclaimed "King of Pop."

The auction was conducted via the French auction platform interencheres.com, where the listing described the item as a “cult object” for Michael Jackson fans, given its association with his electrifying stage presence and iconic dance routines.

Fans may recall Jackson frequently wearing sparkling white socks and gloves while performing hits like Billie Jean  a look that became synonymous with his brand.

The sock sold at auction was similar to those seen in video footage of his moonwalk and signature performances, though the rhinestones had yellowed slightly over the decades.

This isn't the first time Jackson memorabilia has made headlines for fetching large sums. In 2009, a Macau-based casino resort bought his famous moonwalk glove for a jaw-dropping $350,000. Similarly, a hat he wore shortly before that legendary moonwalk was sold in Paris for over $80,000 in 2023.

Despite the controversies that surrounded Jackson during and after his lifetime  including longstanding allegations of child molestation which he and his estate consistently denied  the pop star remains one of the most collectible and commercially viable entertainers posthumously.

His death in 2009 at the age of 50, caused by a drug overdose, only seemed to intensify global fascination with his legacy.

Over a decade later, Jackson’s influence on music, fashion, and performance remains undeniable, and artifacts linked to his life continue to captivate his loyal fanbase. The sale of this sock is just the latest example of how far fans are willing to go to own a piece of pop history.

For those closely following Jackson-related auctions, this latest sale is not just a purchase it’s a connection to a bygone era of global superstardom and unparalleled musical influence.
