In an era where virality often trumps talent, controversy has become the new currency in Nollywood. While Nigeria’s film industry has always been a hotbed of celebrity drama, the rise of social media has made it easier than ever for stars to stay relevant  not through blockbuster roles or iconic performances, but by turning their personal lives into headline-grabbing spectacles.

Several celebrities have mastered the art of milking controversies to build clout, gather followers, and secure brand deals, proving that in Nollywood, noise often pays more than nuance.

Take Yul Edochie, for instance. Once praised for his baritone voice and Nollywood royalty lineage, Yul has now rebranded himself as a polarizing figure. His decision to marry a second wife  actress Judy Austin  while still married to May Edochie sparked nationwide outrage.

Rather than retreat from the backlash, Yul leaned in, posting cryptic videos, spiritual takes, and controversial sermons. He even launched an online ministry, drawing mixed reactions.

Many believe he’s intentionally fanning the flames to remain in the spotlight. What began as personal turmoil has now become a monetized brand.

Nkechi Blessing is another actress who understands the power of controversy. From messy public breakups to explicit Instagram live sessions, she has kept her name on blogs through strategic provocations.

After her split from her ex, Hon. Opeyemi Falegan, she repeatedly attacked him online, sparking trending hashtags and interviews. Her bold, unfiltered persona may not appeal to everyone, but it ensures she's never ignored  and that visibility often translates into endorsements and show appearances.

Iyabo Ojo, known for both her acting and activism, also knows how to ride the waves of public opinion.

Whether it's speaking out against injustice in the industry or feuding with controversial personalities like Lizzy Anjorin or Kemi Olunloyo, Iyabo's name stays on lips and timelines.

Her involvement in the Mohbad case, where she became a vocal advocate demanding justice, earned her both praise and criticism. Still, she remained unbothered, using every trending moment to highlight her brand and humanitarian efforts. With over two million Instagram followers, it’s clear her strategy works.

Even more quietly controversial figures like Regina Daniels have benefited from media storms. Her marriage to billionaire Ned Nwoko, who is over 30 years her senior, stunned the nation.

For weeks, Regina was the topic of debates on age, consent, and wealth. But instead of hiding, she documented her luxury life unapologetically  private jets, exotic vacations, and designer labels.

The uproar gave her an instant brand boost, morphing her into a "baby girl for life" influencer whose content now commands massive engagement.

Tonto Dikeh, though not as active in acting anymore, has managed to keep her name at the center of attention through a blend of philanthropy, politics, and personal wars.

From her messy breakup with Olakunle Churchill to her public spat with former friend Bobrisky, Tonto has turned controversy into a business model.

Each feud is followed by increased media attention, sponsored posts, and brand alignments  a classic case of chaos as a career.

Halima Abubakar also created a stir when she openly called out Apostle Johnson Suleman over an alleged affair.

Her exposé included emotional videos, receipts, and claims of spiritual attacks. The scandal dominated headlines for weeks and sparked debates about Nollywood’s ties to powerful figures.

While her health situation remains a concern, the controversy undeniably reignited interest in her life and past work.

Lastly, Uche Maduagwu, though more known for social media antics than film, has built a persona rooted in trolling celebrities and stirring up dust.

From wearing red bras on Instagram to randomly challenging A-list actors, Uche thrives on shock value. His antics keep him relevant  not in cinema halls, but in the digital buzz that now drives Nollywood attention.

In today’s industry, being controversial isn’t just a side effect of fame  it’s part of the game plan. For these Nollywood figures, every dragged moment, every clapback, and every viral post is a stepping stone to greater influence, attention, and income. Whether the audience loves or hates them, one thing’s certain: they’re watching.
