In a landmark decision delivered on June 13, 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) must allow female corps members to wear skirts as part of their official uniform if it aligns with their religious convictions.

Justice Hauwa Yilwa, who presided over the case, declared that NYSC’s policy requiring only trousers for women violates the Nigerian Constitution. She emphasized that the policy infringes on fundamental rights such as freedom of religion and personal dignity.

“This is a blatant infringement of their fundamental rights,” Justice Yilwa stated.

The judgment followed two merged lawsuits brought forward by Miss Ogunjobi Blessing and Miss Ayuba Vivian. Both former corps members argued that wearing trousers during their service year was against their Christian beliefs, citing Deuteronomy 22:5 — a biblical passage they interpret as prohibiting women from wearing men’s clothing.

In her decision, Justice Yilwa ruled in favor of the applicants, granting all requested reliefs except for the ₦10 million in damages. Instead, the court awarded ₦500,000 each to the plaintiffs, acknowledging the humiliation and emotional distress they endured.

The court further ordered the NYSC to take the following actions:

- Permit female corps members to wear skirts for religious reasons.

- Recall the affected ex-corps members and issue them their discharge certificates.

As of the time of reporting, the NYSC has not issued an official response to the court's decision.
