Veteran Nollywood actress, Opeyemi Aiyeola, has revealed that her decision to block all her colleagues in the film industry for over a decade stemmed from the fear of experiencing a marital crisis or divorce after marriage.
Speaking during a recent appearance on Oyinmomo TV, the actress explained that the drastic decision to isolate herself from her colleagues was taken shortly after she got married to her husband, Olayiwola Abdulwakilu, and relocated to the United States.
“I was off the scene for more than ten years, and I apologised to my fans,” she said. “I held my marriage in high esteem, so I blocked everybody’s contact in the industry.”
Aiyeola, who was a prominent face in Yoruba movies during the 2000s, went completely off-screen following her marriage, a move that confused many of her fans at the time. She explained that the decision wasn’t out of pride or disregard for her colleagues, but a necessary step she felt would protect her marriage and prevent it from ending in divorce, as many people had said was common among entertainers.
“Let’s appreciate our lovers because they caused it,” she continued. “Some of them will say practitioners don’t have stable homes or lives, but they don’t know what happens behind those relationships. So, because I didn’t want my own to be like that, I blocked everyone from the industry for 10 years.”
She added that her choice was also influenced by the need to fully devote herself to raising her two sons, who were born during the period she was away from acting. Now back in Nigeria and gradually returning to the movie scene, Aiyeola said she has reconnected with her colleagues and is ready to focus on rebuilding her career.
“I unblocked everybody when I finally returned to focus on my career. I have two boys, and I have sacrificed everything for them. They should now allow me to also carve my own career,” she concluded.
Aiyeola’s statement, made on July 19, 2025, sheds new light on the silent sacrifices made by many entertainers who struggle to balance fame, family, and societal expectations.
Her candid confession has resonated with many fans and sparked conversations online about the pressure on married women in Nollywood to either quit or drastically reduce their presence in the industry for the sake of their homes.
Her return marks a promising comeback, as many admirers are looking forward to seeing her grace the screen again.
