Bose Ogulu, renowned as the mother and manager of Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy, has shared insights into the complexities of juggling her professional and maternal roles. In a recent interview, Ogulu spoke candidly about the emotional and professional challenges she faces while managing one of Africa’s biggest music exports.
Managing a global music icon is no small task, and for Ogulu, it comes with the added layer of family ties. She admitted that balancing family emotions with business decisions can be particularly demanding. “Yes, sometimes it’s tough drawing the line between work and emotions,” she explained. “But I tell him: ‘Now your mom’s talking,’ or ‘I’m your manager, so yell at me.’ It helps us feel supported, even in disagreements. Objectivity is hard, but we practice.”
Bose Ogulu, often referred to as Mama Burna, emphasized the importance of setting boundaries and maintaining professionalism. According to her, one of the ways she stays grounded is by clearly separating her roles. “Switching from manager to mom hat? Easy—if I was just a mom, I’d stay home. But this is my job,” she said.
Reflecting on the growth of her responsibilities over the years, Ogulu revealed that her duties have expanded well beyond just managing her son. She now oversees a touring crew she affectionately refers to as “40 kids.” “Family extends beyond my kids, now I have 40 ‘kids’ on stage or touring with us,” she shared.
Ogulu also recounted the sacrifices she made during the early stages of Burna Boy’s career. Before their team could afford to pay her, she took on numerous roles including funding music projects, reading contracts, and handling administrative tasks. “Before, they couldn’t pay me; I funded their music, read contracts, handled admin,” she revealed.
She also touched on how her personal experiences helped shape her children’s artistic journeys. “France is special because I speak French and took my kids on trips there, like Biarritz. It became part of their lives. We saw rock music everywhere,” she said.
Through her journey, Ogulu has not only played a pivotal role in Burna Boy’s rise to international fame but has also become a matriarch to a much larger music family. Her ability to switch roles, maintain objectivity, and nurture a growing team reflects her dedication and unique position in the music indust
