Nigerian gay rights activist, Bisi Alimi, has issued a stern warning to those who target the LGBTQ+ community, asserting that such actions will come with serious consequences.

In a post shared on his Instagram page, Alimi stated that anyone who dares to "come for" LGBTQ+ people will have their career destroyed. He stressed that this is not an empty threat but a reality, as the community has the power to take down those who antagonise them.

“If you come for the LGBT people, they will bring you down and end your career. It is not a threat, it’s a fact,” Alimi wrote. He noted that while many believe such consequences can’t happen in Nigeria, the tide is shifting. “You think it won’t happen in Nigeria? Watch and see,” he added.

Alimi’s comments come amid increasing visibility and activism from LGBTQ+ advocates in Nigeria, a country where homosexuality remains criminalised and public sentiment is largely hostile towards sexual minorities.

He implied that the same social media power and advocacy tools used globally by the LGBTQ+ community to confront oppression are also taking root in Nigeria, slowly but surely.

While some have lauded his bravery, the post has stirred mixed reactions online, with both support and backlash from Nigerians who either stand with or oppose his views.

Alimi, known for being the first Nigerian to come out as gay on national television, remains a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights despite the risks and criticism.

His latest statement is a reminder of the ongoing tension surrounding LGBTQ+ issues in Nigeria and how public figures increasingly use digital platforms to assert influence and protect their communities.
