Veteran comedian Alibaba has raised concerns about the growing disregard for professionalism among certain Nigerian comedians.
During a conversation on the Outside The Box podcast, the respected entertainer criticised the behaviour of some of his colleagues, noting that a few now prioritise offensive content over thoughtful humour.
“There are about three Nigerian comedians who I can’t stand,” he said. “They have no decorum. They insult sensibilities. You try to correct them, they won’t listen to you. You send them to a corporate event and they do dirty jokes. And when you receive reports of their unruly behaviour and confront them, they would downplay it.”
He shared a specific experience where he recommended a comedian for a high-profile event, only to later receive backlash over an inappropriate comment made about the host’s plus-size wife.
According to Alibaba, the comedian joked, “If a race happens now and everyone has to carry their wives and run, you can’t carry this woman and run.”
He described the remark as tasteless and said the comedian dismissed his concerns when approached. “He even told somebody that I was only confronting him because he was shining,” Alibaba added.
While he chose not to reveal the names of those involved to avoid tarnishing their careers, Alibaba called on comedians to be more mindful of their material, urging them to understand boundaries and approach comedy with more depth and intelligence.
