Nigeria has lost one of its musical giants, as legendary highlife musician Mike Ejegha has passed away.
Ejegha’s influence on the Nigerian music scene is immeasurable, with a career spanning decades and a catalog of timeless hits that shaped the sound of highlife for generations.
Mike Ejeagha; born 4 April 1930, in Imezi Owa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. He grew up in Coal Camp in a family headed by his civil servant father, then worked with the Ministry of Health of Enugu. He attended St. Patrick's Primary School, Ogbete, Enugu.
Ejeagha started his music career in the mid-20th century. Also known as Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, he has been influential in the evolution of music in the Igbo language for over 6 decades. His first hit was in 1960 – the year of Nigeria's independence.
Known for classics like “Osondi Owendi” and “Life and Death,” Ejegha’s unique blend of storytelling and melodious rhythms resonated deeply with fans across Africa.
Born with a passion for music, Mike Ejegha rose to prominence in the 1970s, captivating audiences with his soulful voice and masterful guitar skills. His songs often reflected the joys and struggles of everyday life, making him a beloved figure among both young and old.
Ejegha’s contributions went beyond entertainment—he was a cultural ambassador who preserved and promoted Igbo highlife music on the global stage.
