The former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has voiced his deep sorrow and concern following the demolition of a property belonging to his brother in Lagos State.
Speaking on the incident, Obi described the demolition as a deeply painful experience for his family. He also criticized what he views as a broader trend of government actions that appear to be targeted and unjust, emphasizing the emotional and material toll such demolitions have on individuals and families.
“This is not just about my brother,” Obi stated. “It is about the continuous disregard for the rule of law and due process in our country. The way people’s properties are pulled down without proper notice or legal backing is unacceptable.”
According to Obi, the house in question, which belonged to his brother, was lawfully acquired and had the necessary documentation. He stressed that no family should have to face such trauma, especially when they have followed legal channels.
“My brother did everything right. He followed the law. The demolition of his house is heartbreaking,” Obi lamented. “This kind of action discourages honest citizens from investing in property and developing our communities.”
The Labour Party stalwart further urged the relevant authorities in Lagos to ensure that justice is done, adding that the matter should serve as a wake-up call for more transparency and fairness in urban development and enforcement practices.
“This is not the kind of leadership we need,” Obi continued. “We must treat our citizens with dignity and respect. When people are treated unfairly, the entire nation suffers.”
As reactions continue to pour in, many Nigerians have taken to social media to express sympathy with the Obi family and to call for greater accountability from government agencies involved in demolition exercises across the country.
