Veteran Nigerian singer, Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has called on music lovers in Nigeria to show more respect to their industry legends, regardless of whether they are still in the spotlight or not.
The “Akpako Master” expressed disappointment over the way Nigerian music fans often dismiss artists who are no longer dominating the charts. He argued that this mindset is damaging to the growth and preservation of Afrobeats as a genre.
Terry G noted the difference between how legends are treated in Western countries and how they are regarded in Africa, especially in Nigeria. He said, “In the West, legends are respected for life. No one calls Jay-Z or Beyoncé outdated. Their impact is honoured.”
According to him, Nigerian fans are quick to label artists as irrelevant the moment they’re not trending, a habit he likened to “brain damage.”
He further criticized the tendency among Nigerians to discard their own heroes, stating that this mindset is part of a larger issue of cultural neglect. “That’s why we believe our ancestors were evil, while Western ancestors are seen as gods,” he added.
The singer warned that if Nigerians fail to value their music pioneers, Afrobeats might eventually lose its meaning, regardless of global recognition or popularity. He emphasized that an artist’s worth should not be determined by constant relevance but by the value they’ve added to the culture over time.
“It’s time to break free from that mindset,” Terry G concluded, calling for a cultural shift in how African legends are celebrated. “If you don’t keep adding value to yourself and those around you, your worth will fade no matter how great you once were.”
