A High Court sitting in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, has sentenced popular gospel singer, Oluwatimileyin Ajayi, to death by hanging for the brutal murder of Salome Adaidu, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The judgment, delivered by Justice Simon Aboki, followed a thorough trial in which the court found Ajayi guilty of killing and dismembering the young corps member. The judge stated that the prosecution had successfully established the facts of the case, presenting compelling evidence that proved Ajayi’s involvement in the crime beyond reasonable doubt.
The gospel singer was charged with one count of culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code applicable in Northern Nigeria. This section deals with intentional killing and prescribes the death penalty upon conviction. Justice Aboki emphasized that the nature of the crime was particularly disturbing and called for the maximum punishment under the law.
In his ruling, the judge noted that acts of such cruelty must be met with the full weight of justice, not only to punish the offender but also to serve as a deterrent to others. Consequently, he sentenced Ajayi to death by hanging, bringing the trial to a close and delivering a sense of closure to the victim’s family.
