Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has officially declared June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” across the state, recognizing the cultural significance and societal contributions of the Igbo community.

The announcement was made public via a proclamation published on the state’s official website, affirming the growing influence of the Igbo people in North Carolina.

The governor acknowledged the Igbo community’s presence in the state for over five decades and applauded their steadfast efforts in preserving cultural heritage while making meaningful contributions to public service, education, healthcare, law, technology, and entrepreneurship.

“The Igbos are dedicated to upholding their cultural traditions from Nigeria, and their community continues to foster unity, connection, and pride,” the proclamation read.

The document also spotlighted the formation of the Igbo Day Festival Organization, a nonprofit launched in 2022 aimed at promoting Igbo heritage and educating both Igbo families and the wider North Carolina public.

Their inaugural festival took place on July 10, 2022, drawing attention to the rich tapestry of Igbo culture and traditions.

Governor Stein praised the community’s role in civic engagement, including volunteering, organizing food drives, supporting shelters, and participating in environmental efforts. He also underscored the importance of educating younger generations to ensure cultural continuity.

“In recognition of their cultural impact, contributions to the economy, and commitment to community service, I hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as Igbo Day in North Carolina,” Stein declared.

The official signing took place at the State Capitol in Raleigh on May 21, 2025, further cementing the Igbo community’s role as an integral part of North Carolina’s multicultural identity.
