Afrobeats sensation, Rema, has revealed how early criticism and online negativity played a crucial role in motivating his journey to stardom. Speaking during a recent interview, the Nigerian star explained how he turned trolling into fuel for success, rather than allowing it to derail his passion for music.
The 24-year-old artist reflected on the resistance he faced when he introduced his unique sound to the Afrobeats scene.
“It’s just beautiful to see something that people trolled me for, criticised me for… and I’m benefiting from that,” he said. “Imagine if I actually listened to the trolls and was like, oh, I think I should switch it off. Four years later, it paid and it paid big.”
Rema recently made history as the first Afrobeats act to tour India, a feat he proudly described as a huge career milestone. His visit, he noted, was not just about attending a wedding or reception but establishing cultural resonance in a territory new to the genre.
“It’s a huge territory,” he emphasized. “And I’m actually the first person to actually tour India from Afrobeats, basically. And I even came from Africa… it’s a big, huge deal.”
Despite the initial doubts about his vocal style and sonic choices, Rema has risen to become one of the most influential voices in Nigerian music today, enjoying global recognition and a dedicated fan base. His journey, marked by resilience, proves that believing in one’s uniqueness can silence even the loudest critics.
Rema’s story is now a testament to young creatives facing harsh feedback online: stay true to your sound. His growth from being trolled to touring globally underscores a powerful lesson authenticity pays.
