The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has commended award-winning Nigerian singer Davido for his efforts in projecting a positive image of Nigeria internationally.
This recognition comes in response to Davido’s recent appearance on the Culture Knock Out podcast, where he described Lagos as a vibrant destination for nightlife and entertainment. He also encouraged foreigners to visit the city and experience it firsthand rather than rely on negative stereotypes.
In an official letter dated May 16, 2025, the NOA hailed Davido’s remarks as “patriotic,” particularly highlighting his comments about global insecurity. During the podcast, the 32-year-old singer stated: “Everywhere is dangerous… the Congo is dangerous, Benin is dangerous, Paris is dangerous. Even in Atlanta, you could go somewhere and get shot.”
The agency praised the Unavailable crooner for challenging prevailing negative narratives about Nigeria, aligning his comments with its newly launched National Identity Project, an initiative aimed at reshaping global perceptions of the country and promoting national values.
“It is true that we need to tell our own positive stories,” the letter read. “We count on you to continue to project the best of us, while we work to redress the negativities in public and social life.”
This commendation follows recent backlash Davido faced in November after stating that “Nigeria’s economy is in shambles.” It also comes weeks after Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, rebuked media personality Scott Iguma for claiming that Lagos “smells.”
Despite occasional controversy, the NOA’s letter reflects growing institutional support for celebrities who use their platforms to promote national pride and unity.
