Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has declared that he has no regrets about his unconventional life choices, as he marks his 75th birthday.
The outspoken musician and media personality, who once aspired to be a Catholic priest, said walking his own path shaped him into the man he is today.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Charly Boy reflected on his bold life decisions, including rejecting a high-paying job at Mobil Oil arranged by his influential father, the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.
“I only wanted to break out of my father’s shadow,” he stated. “I have no regret whatsoever, as life’s experience has built me into a stronger and fulfilled man.”
Known for his rebellious streak and dedication to activism, Charly Boy embraced a lifestyle that contrasted sharply with the values of his conservative background.
“I came from a very good home… I thank God for all the moral codes that were handed down by my father, which has made me understand the essence of life itself,” he said. He added that contentment, humility, and simplicity were the core principles he inherited.
Though turning 75 is a major milestone, Charly Boy revealed he would spend his day quietly: “No party. I’m just taking calls and chilling.”
He also teased the release of his memoir, titled “999”, which chronicles his life’s battles from disowning his parents, rebelling against societal norms, to marrying four times before turning 36.
Charly Boy, who has been married for over 40 years to African-American singer Diane, remains a revered figure for his advocacy. From leading protests like Our Mumu Don Do to demanding pension rights for ex-soldiers, he continues to stand for the voiceless.
