Afrobeats star Rema has paid a powerful tribute to music icon D’banj during his headline show at London’s O2 Arena, crediting the veteran singer for blazing the trail that made his own success possible.

The emotional moment unfolded on Sunday, June 8, when Rema surprised fans by inviting D’banj on stage at his sold-out concert. Addressing the crowd, Rema expressed deep gratitude for the doors the elder artist had opened over a decade ago.

Referencing D’banj’s 2012 international hit Oliver Twist, which became the first Nigerian song to enter the UK Top 10 chart, Rema pointed to that achievement as a game-changer for the global recognition of Afrobeats.

“First of all, I want to appreciate you for opening the doors,” Rema said. “You were one of the first ones to bring Afrobeats to the UK. You and Don Jazzy held it down. Y’all opened that door. I appreciate you for life. I love you from the bottom of my heart. If you never existed, I would have never existed.”

The heartfelt words drew loud cheers from the audience and sparked an outpouring of emotion online, with many praising Rema for publicly acknowledging a legend while he’s still alive.

D’banj, known for his massive hits in the 2000s and his pioneering role in Mo’Hits Records alongside Don Jazzy, is widely regarded as one of the artists who helped push Nigerian music into the international spotlight.

Rema’s concert, which drew over 20,000 fans, was a celebration of his fast-rising career and included surprise performances, high-energy visuals, and a sense of unity between generations of Afrobeats stars.
