The Nigerian film and television industry has lost one of its most vibrant and creative minds. Kayode Peters, a talented actor, producer, and director, passed away in Canada on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

His death came as a shock to both fans and colleagues, many of whom have taken to social media to pay tribute to the man who played a major role in shaping modern Nigerian comedy on screen.

Born on September 25, 1975, in Ibadan, Kayode Peters began his journey into acting and storytelling at an early age. He studied at the University of Lagos, where his passion for theatre blossomed.

As a member of the school’s famous Theater 15 troupe, he worked under the mentorship of veterans like Kunle Bamtefa, learning stagecraft, directing, and the nuances of performance. This early exposure to rigorous stage performance laid a solid foundation for his career in both theater and screen.

Peters first appeared on the radar of Nigerian households through his role in the iconic Wale Adenuga Productions comedy series Papa Ajasco and Company.

His natural comedic timing and ability to deliver humor effortlessly made him a fan favorite. It was in this series that many Nigerians first saw his potential not just as an actor but as a storyteller capable of blending humor with life lessons.

However, the project that brought Kayode Peters into full national limelight was My Flatmates, the African Magic-produced sitcom where he served as executive producer.

The show, featuring a cast of talented comedians and actors like Okey Bakassi, Basketmouth, and Buchi, became a staple in many homes. It followed the hilarious experiences of roommates navigating everyday life, friendships, love, and financial challenges.

Peters’ creative direction brought life and freshness to the show, making it one of the longest-running sitcoms in contemporary Nigerian TV.

Kayode Peters didn’t just stop at producing comedy shows. He ventured fully into filmmaking and built a portfolio of successful productions that showcased his range and passion.

His first television series, Twilight Zone, launched in the early 2000s, proved he had the vision to lead beyond acting. He went on to produce a number of standout films, including Excuse My African, shot in New York, which explored the African immigrant experience with a mix of humor and depth.

Other popular projects credited to him include Crazy Grannies, a comedy about three elderly women seeking fun and freedom, and Meet My Girlfriends, a romantic comedy with a youthful, energetic vibe.

He also produced Sisi Eko and Doll House, both of which received commendations for their creative storytelling and relatable characters.

In 2022, Peters released Survivors, a comedy featuring internet sensations Mr Macaroni and Broda Shaggi.

The film followed the lives of two roadside mechanics who stumbled upon a kidnapping gang and decided to join for quick money.

Survivors was praised for its sharp humor, social commentary, and energetic performances, and it introduced Peters’ work to a younger generation of Nollywood audiences.

Beyond his work on screen, Kayode Peters was deeply committed to nurturing young talents. He often partnered with emerging actors, comedians, and directors, offering them opportunities to learn, grow, and perform.

Many Nollywood stars today credit him for giving them their first break or believing in their potential when others wouldn’t.

His death has left a significant void in the entertainment industry. While the cause of death is yet to be officially disclosed, tributes from industry veterans, friends, and fans continue to pour in.

Peters will be remembered not just for the laughter he brought to millions, but for his dedication to excellence and the development of the Nigerian entertainment space.

Kayode Peters lived a life of purpose, creativity, and impact. He leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the characters he created, the stories he told, and the many lives he touched along the way.
