Mavin Records founder and veteran music producer Don Jazzy has spoken openly about some of the music stars he regrets not signing, revealing how timing and circumstances led to missed chances with several now-prominent Nigerian artists.
In a recent interview, Don Jazzy expressed admiration for singers Simi and Teni, noting that he had wished they had joined the Mavin family. “I like Simi. I didn’t sign her. I wish I did. I like Teni. I wish I did,” he said.
He also reflected on a past opportunity involving Afrobeats superstar Davido, explaining that he opted not to pursue it, confident that Davido would thrive regardless. “I had the opportunity for Davido, obviously, but I didn’t because I kind of figured that he would be fine.”
On why he never signed Wizkid, Don Jazzy pointed out that the singer was already signed to another label at the time. “To Wizkid, obviously, I couldn’t because Banky got to him first. That would have been amazing,” he said.
He further revealed that discussions had taken place with rapper Falz about a possible deal, but it never materialised. “Falz, I love his work, and we almost actually had a deal. Well, it didn’t work out,” he recalled.
Don Jazzy concluded by acknowledging the realities of the industry, saying, “At the end of the day, you cannot sign everybody.”
