British pop artist Jessie J has opened up about being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and revealed plans to have surgery following her upcoming performance at the Summertime Ball.
In a candid Instagram video on Wednesday, the 37-year-old singer, known for songs like “Price Tag,” explained that she has recently been going through numerous medical tests.
She confirmed, “I was diagnosed with early breast cancer,” adding, “Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word ‘early’.”
Bringing some lightness to the situation, Jessie J joked, “It’s a very dramatic way to get a boob job. I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery, and I will come back with massive tits and more music.”
She shared that making her diagnosis public was partly to help herself cope and also to support others who might be facing similar challenges. “I just wanted to be open and share it,” she said. “One, because, selfishly, I do not talk about it enough. I’m not processing it because I’m working so hard. I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories. I’m an open book.”
Jessie J expressed sorrow for those who are experiencing similar or worse struggles. “It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse – that’s the bit that kills me,” she said.
Reflecting on the timing, she noted, “The timing of it has been mad but also beautiful and given me this incredible perspective in this time. But honestly I need to process it and talk about it and, I need a hug. You have loved me through all my good and hard times. And I don’t want this to be any different.”
In addition to this, Jessie J welcomed her son Sky Safir Cornish Colman in 2023 after previously experiencing a miscarriage in 2021. She has also faced other health issues, including a heart condition diagnosed in childhood, a minor stroke as a teenager, and temporary hearing loss in 2020.
She is Scheduled to perform at Capital’s Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium on 15 June before taking a break for her surgery.
