Popular Nigerian preacher and founder of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has made a controversial statement about the biblical story of Adam and Eve, suggesting that the original sin that led to Adam’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden was not the consumption of an apple, as commonly believed.
According to Pastor Ibiyeomie, the real offense was that Adam interfered with what belonged to God — specifically, the tithe. He argued that the tree Adam was commanded not to eat from symbolized God's portion, and by touching it, Adam violated divine ownership.
In his words, “The sin Adam committed that got God so angry that He kicked him out of the Garden of Eden was not eating apple. It was because he touched His tithe. If it was apple, we’ll not be eating apple today.”
The statement has sparked discussions among believers and theologians alike, as it challenges a long-held interpretation of the Genesis account. While many Christians interpret the forbidden fruit as symbolic of disobedience, Pastor Ibiyeomie’s perspective introduces a financial and covenantal dimension to the narrative — linking the concept of tithing to the fall of man.
His remarks were part of a broader sermon emphasizing the importance of honoring God with one’s substance and respecting divine instructions concerning tithes and offerings.
As is often the case with unconventional teachings, reactions to his statement have been mixed, with some applauding the spiritual insight, while others criticize it as a theological stretch. Nonetheless, the comment has once again highlighted the influential preacher's flair for stirring conversation within religious circles.
