The synergy between music and film in Nigeria has never been stronger, and some of our top musicians already blur the lines between performer and performer.
With larger-than-life personas, dramatic flair, and undeniable charisma, these seven Nigerian musicians led by the likes of Odumodublvck and Burna Boy could easily steal the show on the big screen if they ever took Nollywood seriously.
1. Odumodublvck
Odumodublvck’s gritty delivery, streetwise persona, and ability to tell vivid, almost cinematic stories in his lyrics position him perfectly for a role in a gangster or crime drama. His intensity, fashion-forward look, and Igbo-infused slang would translate seamlessly into the role of a feared but calculated gang leader or an underdog hero rising through Lagos’ underground world.
2. Burna Boy
Burna Boy is already a character on his own. From his brash confidence to his Afro-fusion musicality and Pan-African messaging, he carries the poise of a warlord or revolutionary leader. In Nollywood, he’d shine in historical epics, action thrillers, or roles where he plays a rebel with a cause—think a modern-day Fela with guns and fire in his eyes.
3. Tems
Tems’ calm demeanor, expressive eyes, and soft-spoken voice hide a depth that would serve her well in emotional or psychological dramas. She could easily fit into roles of a quiet but powerful woman navigating betrayal, trauma, or even love. Her poise would also fit perfectly in suspense or noir-style films.
4. Portable
As unpredictable as he is loud, Portable would be perfect for comic relief or chaotic, wild characters. His natural ability to cause drama, pull attention, and speak in unpredictable phrases makes him ideal for grassroots comedies or roles as a dramatic street hustler or herbalist’s troublesome apprentice.
5. Ayra Starr
With her Gen Z flair, Ayra Starr would be perfect for romantic dramas, coming-of-age stories, or even futuristic Nollywood films. Her youth, expressive style, and confidence would work for characters navigating fame, love, or betrayal in a city like Lagos.
6. Blaqbonez
Naturally witty and confident, Blaqbonez has all the charm and comedic timing of a Nollywood playboy or troublemaking younger brother. His self-awareness and knack for satirical humour would make him perfect in romantic comedies or meta-films poking fun at the industry itself.
7. Tiwa Savage
Already dabbling in film with her debut in Water & Garri, Tiwa has proven she can handle dramatic roles. Her elegance, emotional range, and fierce independence make her suited for roles as a high-society woman, a betrayed lover, or even a political figure navigating chaos.
