Renowned gospel artist Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, widely known as New Jerusalem, has died at the age of 53, sparking a wave of mourning across Benue State and Nigeria’s Christian community. The singer, celebrated for fusing Tiv Swange rhythms with gospel messages, passed away after a brief illness.
His death was confirmed over the weekend, with prominent figures, including former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, paying tribute to his musical and spiritual legacy. Ortom, during a condolence visit to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi, praised him as “a devoted Christian whose music resonated far beyond Nigeria’s borders.”
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom stated. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”
The former governor recalled how New Jerusalem’s music once featured in an international programme in Australia, played during a lesson by a Tiv music teacher a reflection of his global impact. Ortom promised continued support for the bereaved family and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe. “I will not abandon the family after the burial,” he pledged.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve expressed deep gratitude to Ortom, revealing that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in honour of the former governor’s compassion.
The singer is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, and four children. His burial has been scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
Prayers during the condolence visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo of the Brethren Prayer Group.
