Nigerian chess champion and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has been gifted a brand new Nord A9 SUV by indigenous auto manufacturer Nord Motion, following a friendly chess game with the company’s CEO, Oluwatobi Ajayi.
On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Onakoya took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his appreciation, sharing photos of the new vehicle and praising the gesture as deeply meaningful.
“Just got home to the most heartwarming surprise from my #nordmotion family—the stunning new Nord A9 SUV. Hands down the most beautiful car I’ve ever owned, but even more beautiful is the love behind this incredible gift. Grateful beyond words,” he wrote.
Hinting at the spirit of competition behind the gift, he added, “Of course the only way to get the new car was by not losing this match.”
Alongside the SUV, Onakoya also received a one-year extension to his brand ambassador deal with Nord Motion, a partnership he proudly celebrated online.

In an official statement released by Nord Automobiles on May 7, the company noted that the SUV was presented to Onakoya on May 5, 2025. The gesture was described as a tribute to his global accomplishments and a celebration of shared values such as innovation, excellence, and resilience.
The statement revealed that the vehicle handover followed a closely contested chess match between Onakoya and Ajayi, which ended in a draw. According to Nord, the game reflected the mutual respect and strategic mindset both men bring to their respective fields.
“The friendly rivalry between Onakoya and Ajayi mirrors the passion, precision, and determination that both individuals embody—Onakoya in chess, and Ajayi in automotive leadership,” the company said.
They added that the new SUV serves as a symbol of Onakoya’s remarkable journey and relentless drive, stating, “Just like his record-breaking chess game, Onakoya’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, and with every new challenge, there’s always another car to match the victory—another game, another car.”
This marks the second time Nord Motion has gifted a vehicle to Onakoya, further solidifying their growing relationship.
