Nollywood star Toyin Abraham is gearing up for the release of her much-anticipated epic film Iyalode, which is set to hit cinemas on June 6, 2025, following an exclusive premiere on June 4.
Directed by seasoned filmmaker Adebayo Tijani, the film features a powerhouse cast including Kehinde Bankole, Iyabo Ojo, Muyiwa Ademola, Wale Ojo, Kolawole Ajeyemi, and Bukky Wright, who makes a long-awaited return to the big screen after 15 years.
Iyalode marks a significant career milestone for Abraham, who has long desired to dive into the epic film genre. In several interviews, she revealed her passion for telling stories that highlight Nigeria’s culture and heritage. “I wanted Iyalode to feel different, to showcase our culture and history in a grand way. It’s a dream come true for me,” she said.
According to The Nation newspaper, the film completed production in July 2024 and has been building anticipation ever since. Abraham, who is known for empowering other talents in the industry, emphasized her commitment to providing opportunities for both emerging and veteran actors. “I don’t have to shine alone; I want other people to shine,” she said.
One of the most talked-about aspects of the film is the return of Nollywood veteran Bukky Wright. Speaking to QED.ng, Wright shared how Abraham personally convinced her to take the role. “Iyalode happens to be my first epic movie after a very long time, after like 15 years, and Toyin was like ‘mommy, you have to come o’,” she recalled.
Despite excitement surrounding the project, Abraham has faced some criticism, particularly for promoting the film in Yoruba rather than her native Edo language. She responded by explaining her deep ties to Yoruba culture through marriage and her intent to reach a broader audience.
With a compelling storyline, a blend of old and new talents, and stunning visuals, Iyalode is set to be a landmark in Nollywood’s epic film space. The buzz across social media, especially on Instagram, suggests that fans are eagerly awaiting its theatrical release. For Abraham, Iyalode is more than just a movie it’s a cultural statement and a major leap forward in her filmmaking journey.
