Peter Obi has addressed the recent conversations around his relationship with Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, making it clear that the political differences between them should not be mistaken for a personal quarrel.

The NDC presidential candidate spoke on the matter today at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) in Enugu, where he also responded to questions about his record as governor of Anambra State.

Obi said his relationship with Soludo goes beyond their present political positions. He pointed out that both families have a personal connection, particularly through his role as a godparent to Soludo’s children.

“I and my wife are godparents to Soludo's children. We are not fighting. If they say anything, I will answer them. Like I said yesterday, I didn't leave any debt in Anambra State. Even Governor Alex Otti confirmed it this morning on national TV", he said.

His comments came amid questions over statements concerning his time in office and the financial position of Anambra State when he handed over power.

Obi maintained that he had already made his position on the issue clear and repeated his claim that his administration did not leave the state with debt. He also referred to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, saying Otti had confirmed the position during a television appearance earlier in the day.

Rather than presenting his relationship with Soludo as a personal dispute, Obi framed the situation as one in which political disagreements can exist without necessarily affecting personal relationships.

His reference to being godparents to Soludo’s children was also significant because it placed the political discussion in the context of a relationship that predates their current positions and public disagreements.

Obi served as Anambra governor from 2006 to 2013 before moving into national politics. Soludo, an economist and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, became Anambra governor in 2022.

The latest comments therefore touch on two separate issues that have increasingly featured in discussions around Obi and Anambra: his relationship with the current governor and the financial record of his administration.

On the first, Obi said plainly that he and Soludo were not fighting. On the second, he stood by his earlier statement that he did not leave Anambra State with debt.

“I and my wife are godparents to Soludo's children. We are not fighting. If they say anything, I will answer them.”

Obi’s remarks at the editors’ conference put his position on both issues on record, while also indicating that he intends to respond whenever claims are made about his administration or his relationship with the Anambra governor.

For Obi, the political disagreements surrounding the two men do not necessarily translate into a breakdown of their personal relationship. His emphasis was that whatever political differences may exist, he does not consider himself to be engaged in a personal fight with Soludo.
