TikTok Faces Massive £450 Million Penalty for Violating EU Privacy Rules

TikTok has come under fire from European Union privacy regulators, facing a staggering £450 million (530 million euros) fine for breaching the bloc’s stringent data protection laws.

The sanction follows a lengthy four-year probe led by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), which oversees TikTok’s operations in the EU due to the company’s European headquarters being based in Dublin.

The DPC’s investigation revealed that TikTok had been transferring the personal data of European users to China without offering adequate protection measures as required under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The probe concluded that TikTok failed to ensure that data accessed remotely by staff in China met the EU’s standard of privacy protection.

“TikTok failed to verify, guarantee and demonstrate that the personal data of (European) users, remotely accessed by staff in China, was afforded a level of protection essentially equivalent to that guaranteed within the EU,” said Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle.

In addition to the fine, the Irish watchdog ordered TikTok to bring its data operations into full compliance within six months.

The commission also faulted the social media platform for a lack of transparency regarding the destinations of users’ data.

TikTok, however, is pushing back against the ruling. In a brief statement, the company expressed disappointment with the decision and stated its intention to appeal the fine.

The case renews concerns over data security and foreign access to sensitive information, especially among platforms popular with young users.

Critics have long warned about TikTok’s ties to China and have called for stricter oversight and potential restrictions.

This development adds to the global scrutiny TikTok continues to face, as lawmakers and regulators from various countries keep a close watch on how the company handles data privacy, cross-border transfers, and user protection.
