Emeka Ugwuonye, the legal representative of Nollywood actress May Edochie, has provided a fresh update on her ongoing divorce proceedings with actor Yul Edochie.
The divorce process officially began in August 2023 after May filed a petition, citing adultery and demanding N100 million in damages from Judy Austin, who Yul introduced as his second wife in April 2022 following the birth of their child.
In a lengthy Facebook post shared on Sunday, Ugwuonye revealed that significant progress has been made in the case, with both parties reaching agreements on major issues such as child custody and the division of marital property. However, he noted that the divorce itself has not yet been finalized, mainly because the issue of damages against Judy Austin remains unresolved.
The lawyer emphasized that while many fans are fixated on the official dissolution of the marriage, there are several other critical aspects involved. He outlined four major components of the divorce: the legal dissolution of marriage and right to remarry, arrangements concerning the children, division of marital assets, and the claim for damages against Judy Austin.
Ugwuonye expressed frustration over what he described as an undue obsession with the timeline of the divorce. He clarified that May Edochie is not in a hurry to remarry and is unbothered by the pace of the proceedings.
“May is doing well. She has no plans to remarry at this time, so she is not concerned about the timing of her divorce. She has her children, is in control of the family house, and is doing well economically,” he wrote.
He urged the public to remain patient and avoid adding pressure, stressing that competent lawyers are handling the case and that every divorce follows its own unique timeline.
Ugwuonye concluded by assuring May’s supporters that she is coping well and remains focused on her personal well-being and her children.
