Nigerian singer Lojay has shared his thoughts on the recent trend of artists publicly criticizing award shows when they don't win. Appearing on HipTV’s Trending, the singer emphasized the importance of professionalism in the music industry, even when emotions run high.
Lojay noted that it’s normal for artists to feel disappointed after not clinching an award they hoped for, but he believes there’s a better way to handle the situation. “Everybody can get emotional about stuff for particular reasons, and that’s okay,” he said. “But at the end of the day, you’re meant to be a professional artist, so don’t let your emotions take control.”
The singer’s remarks come in the wake of backlash following the recently held 17th Headies Awards. While many congratulated winners, some artists took to social media to air their grievances. Notably, Shallipopi despite winning an award expressed displeasure and even vowed never to attend the ceremony again.
Reacting to this, Lojay urged artists to maintain decorum, reminding them that awards are just one part of their journey. “I don’t think it makes sense to start trashing an award show just because you did not win,” he added.
His comments have sparked discussions online, with many fans agreeing that while criticism is valid, there’s a need for maturity and class in expressing disappointment.
As the Nigerian music industry continues to grow globally, voices like Lojay’s are calling for a balance between passion and professionalism win or lose.
