Nigerian filmmakers Funke Akindele and Mo Abudu have been recognised by The Hollywood Reporter as two of the most influential women in international film for 2024, cementing their status as leading voices shaping global cinema from Africa.
Mo Abudu, CEO of EbonyLife Media, is no stranger to international acclaim. This year, she launched the $50 million Afro Film Fund to support African filmmakers and announced the upcoming opening of EbonyLife Place London, a cultural hub dedicated to African creativity.
“Stay focused, be authentic and find your own voice,” Abudu advised emerging creatives in her interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “The world doesn’t need more copies; it needs what only you can bring.”
Joining her on the list is Funke Akindele, whose 2024 blockbuster Everybody Loves Jenifa dominated the Nigerian box office. “It’s about owning and empowering our narrative,” Akindele stated, underscoring her commitment to telling authentic Nigerian stories.
Their recognition is not just a personal milestone but a significant moment for Nollywood. It signals growing international acknowledgment of Nigeria’s creative talent and storytelling power.
Together, Abudu and Akindele represent a new era for African cinema one that is bold, original, and impossible to ignore. Their presence on the global stage is a reminder that the world is finally taking notice of what Nollywood has to offer.
With women like these at the helm, Nigeria’s film industry is clearly ready for its spotlight moment.
