AMVCA and the Recognition Gap in Nollywood

The 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) recently held with major wins for Seven Doors stars Chioma Akpotha and Femi Adebayo. But while the glitz was undeniable, it reignited an ongoing conversation: Is the AMVCA enough to represent Nollywood’s vast talent pool?

As Nigeria’s most prominent film award, the AMVCA holds significant weight. Yet, in a country producing hundreds of films yearly, having only one major award platform creates an imbalance.

With limited categories, many independent productions and emerging talents are left in the shadows. Some deserving creators miss out on recognition, simply due to limited visibility or marketing resources.

Beyond actors, the technical crew and creatives behind the scenes also deserve attention. Nollywood has long struggled with repetitive casting and underrepresentation of diverse talent.

Many rising stars and skilled professionals working on lower-budget or independent projects often go unnoticed, reducing opportunities for career growth and industry collaboration.

TV is another area in need of better representation. While the AMVCA includes television categories, they are few, and often only recognize lead actors or writers.

A separate award body dedicated solely to television like what the Golden Globes and SAG Awards do for Hollywood could spotlight the growing impact of Nigerian TV.

Awards are more than accolades; they influence careers, open doors to funding, collaborations, and distribution. Networking at such events can also lead to future projects. While smaller award shows like BON Awards and The Film Joint exist, Nollywood needs more structured platforms to match its growth.

The AMVCA alone cannot carry the weight of an entire industry. If Nollywood wants to keep pace globally, more award bodies—and better recognition structures—must emerge.
