Music critic and journalist Joey Akan has reignited controversy over Burna Boy’s evolving public persona, claiming the artist’s symbolic “African Giant” didn’t fade due to public betrayal, but rather through what he calls “self-inflicted exile.”

Akan’s criticism follows Burna Boy’s recent emotional reflection on social media, where the Grammy-winning star lamented the death of the "African Giant"  a term that once represented his bold connection to African identity and pride.

However, Joey argues that the demise of that identity was not externally driven but was the result of Burna Boy’s growing alienation from his Nigerian audience.

According to Joey, Burna Boy’s global rise changed his outlook drastically. As international stages opened up, the singer allegedly began to belittle his cultural origins, labeling Nigerian culture as “empty” and his homeland as “irrelevant.” This, Joey claims, marked the beginning of Burna’s disconnection from his base.

He also referenced Burna Boy’s controversial interactions with fans  including alleged verbal and physical confrontations  as evidence of his deteriorating rapport with the public that once championed him.

“The ‘African Giant’ didn’t die a heroic death,” Joey noted. “He walked away from the very people who helped build him, only to return with bitterness and blame.”

The journalist insists that Burna’s ongoing success may have blinded him to the value of his roots, pushing him into a state of arrogance. He warns that the musician’s continued estrangement from Nigerian fans could permanently damage his legacy on the continent.

While Burna Boy has not responded directly to Joey Akan’s remarks, the conversation adds another layer to the ongoing debate about fame, identity, and cultural loyalty in the global entertainment space
