Nollywood actress Rachel Okonkwo has spoken out about the tremendous social pressure that Nigerian single women, particularly those over 30, face. She addressed the stigma and expectations surrounding marriage in a powerful message, stressing the value of waiting for the right moment and maintaining peace of mind.
“Being 35, not married, and a woman in Nigeria feels like a crime to society. No one should force you into marriage. Pressure will not raise the dead or fill your heart with peace. Wait for the right time,” she stated.
Okonkwo highlighted the contradiction many women face—being urged to marry as they age, yet also mourned if they pass away young. “As a woman, once you hit 30, the world starts shouting ‘marriage, marriage, marriage.’ But if you die at 30, they’ll say you left too soon. If you live and remain unmarried, they’ll say you’re already too old,” she noted.
The actress made it clear that she is not swayed by public opinion or false stories about her personal life. “I’m not married. I’m not under pressure. And to those who are spreading false information about me, it is untrue. She confirmed, "I'll wait for my own time."
