Omowunmi, the wife of the late Nigerian artist Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, better known as Mohbad, delivered a moving tribute at the 17th Headies Awards, leaving the audience in tears.
The event, which took place on Sunday, April 27, at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, brought together many of Nigeria’s top music stars to celebrate excellence in the industry.
Mohbad, who was signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Music before his untimely death, was posthumously awarded two prestigious honors — Best Street Music (Street Hop Artist) of the Year and the Viewer’s Choice Award for his hit song “Egwu,” featuring Chike.
As she accepted the awards on his behalf, Omowunmi gave a powerful and emotional speech, expressing that Mohbad’s spirit lives on through their son, Liam.
She also shared her belief that one day, Liam would come to understand the immense legacy his father left behind through his music.
She said:
“On behalf of myself, my son Liam, my husband’s younger brother Adura, and the entire Imonelization family, I want to thank you all for this award. Although Mohbad is no longer with us, he continues to live on. I don’t refer to him as my late husband because he’s eternal, especially through our son Liam. Even though he’s too young to fully understand the magnitude of his father’s greatness, I have faith that one day, he will. Thank you, Headies, for honoring my husband. Thank you for preserving his memory and his legacy. This means the world to me, to Liam, and to the whole Imonelization family.”
Her heartfelt words struck a chord with everyone in the room, offering a moving reminder of Mohbad’s lasting influence and the legacy he continues to build, not only through his music but also through his family.
