Forensic psychologist Uwom Eze has dismissed the claim that Nigerian singer Mohbad’s death was linked to drug abuse, offering an alternative explanation during a recent coroner’s court session.
Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, passed away on September 12, 2023, after receiving an injection from nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe. Although he was buried the following day, the police exhumed his body on September 21 for further investigation into his cause of death.
The initial autopsy, performed by a pathologist, could not determine the exact cause due to the body’s advanced decomposition. However, a toxicology report, released in May 2024, revealed traces of Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, in his system, though not at a level that would have been fatal. This led to speculation about potential drug overdose.
In the coroner’s court, Eze, who conducted a second autopsy, explained that the substances found in Mohbad’s body were standard, regulated doses of antihistamines used to treat allergies. He ruled out the possibility of illicit drug use as a contributing factor.
Eze also examined the injection site, noting that the injury appeared superficial. He explained, “Even a newborn baby wouldn’t die from that injury,” suggesting that the injury was likely no longer visible due to the post-mortem changes in the body.
The forensic psychologist proposed that Mohbad’s death might have been caused by an extreme allergic reaction to the administered substance, resulting in multiple organ failure. He referred to the event as a “medical misadventure,” explaining that a severe hypersensitivity reaction could have led to the fatal outcome.
Coroner Adedayo Shotobi confirmed that a final ruling would be communicated once all relevant parties were informed.
