Nollywood has grown beyond simple, rushed productions into a global force delivering world-class storytelling.

Over the past five years, several films have stood out, pushing boundaries, experimenting with narrative structures, and changing the way audiences experience Nigerian cinema.

Here’s a look at five Nollywood movies that have redefined storytelling recently:

1. King of Boys (2018/2021 – The Return of the King) :

Directed by Kemi Adetiba, King of Boys is a political crime thriller that took Nollywood by storm. It introduced complex character arcs, intricate political plots, and morally grey protagonists rarely seen in Nigerian movies.

The sequel, The Return of the King released as a Netflix series, further expanded the universe with deeper storytelling, showing Kemi Adetiba’s commitment to long-form, layered narratives that kept viewers on edge.

2. The Milkmaid (2020):

Inspired by the insurgency in Northern Nigeria, Desmond Ovbiagele’s The Milkmaid tells the harrowing story of two sisters caught in the chaos of terrorism.

The film is visually stunning and emotionally charged, offering an authentic, heartbreaking look at the human cost of conflict. It bravely explores themes often ignored in mainstream Nollywood films and was Nigeria’s entry for the Oscars in 2021.

3. Oloture (2020):

Kenneth Gyang’s Oloture shed light on the dark world of human trafficking through the eyes of an undercover journalist.

Bold and unflinching, the film combined investigative storytelling with rich cinematography. Its gritty realism and the decision to tell a painful, ongoing story made Oloture stand out as a daring and socially conscious piece of work.

4. Aníkúlápó (2022):

Kunle Afolayan’s Aníkúlápó transported audiences to a mystical version of ancient Yoruba kingdoms.

By blending folklore, magic realism, and cultural history, Afolayan delivered a deeply layered narrative with strong character development and lush visuals. Aníkúlápó showed that Nollywood could successfully tell epic, culturally rooted stories with universal appeal, earning high praise globally.

5. Gangs of Lagos (2023)
Directed by Jade Osiberu, Gangs of Lagos broke new ground with its gritty depiction of life in Lagos Island’s inner streets. It masterfully wove together themes of friendship, survival, politics, and crime.

The dynamic storytelling, fast-paced action, and emotional depth of the characters made it one of Nollywood’s boldest urban dramas yet.

These movies have reshaped Nollywood’s approach to storytelling, proving that Nigerian filmmakers can tackle serious themes, build complex characters, and use stunning visuals to tell compelling stories.

With global platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Showmax embracing Nollywood content, the industry is set to continue its journey toward even bigger and bolder narratives.

Today’s Nollywood is no longer just about entertainment  it’s about telling stories that matter, stories that resonate globally while staying proudly Nigerian.
