Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has come down hard on Nigeria’s revised electricity tariff system, branding it a “massive scam” in a fiery social media post.

Taking to her X account on Tuesday, the actress didn’t hold back as she criticised the disparity between the high tariffs and the actual power supply, particularly for consumers under the controversial “Band A” category.

“This banding of electricity is a huge FRAUD! I said it before, and I repeat it again,” she wrote. “‘Band A’ is supposed to get 20 hours of electricity at an exorbitant tariff, but if you get 2 hours, to God be the glory. A huge FRAUD…. KMT.”

Her post quickly went viral, triggering widespread reactions from Nigerians online who echoed her frustration, sharing their own experiences of erratic electricity despite being placed in high-tariff categories.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently rolled out a revised pricing model that segments consumers into bands based on daily power availability. Those in Band A are promised 20 hours of electricity daily but are charged the highest rates.

However, critics say the new structure has led to inflated billing without the promised improvements in supply. Henshaw’s remarks add to a growing chorus of voices demanding accountability in the nation’s struggling power sector.
